I like to update my CV after a major project or at most every 6 months. This helps write down what I’ve just been working on whilst I still remember the best details. So I’ve recently updated my CV and posted it on my usual places: my harddrive, my dropbox, linkedin, monster, google docs and stackoverflow careers. I’m not always looking for work but I don’t mind my CV being publicly available. (I’m always available for CV help btw if you want it).
Now being publicly available recruitment consultants like to ring me up and discuss moves. The standard practice for a recruitment consultant is to ring the person, discuss what they are looking for, discuss any roles they have. They then send over the details of the role and check they have the candidates most up to date CV. If the candidate wants to proceed in applying for that job the consultant will forward the CV to the employer. Thats great.
Well for me this time it didn’t quite happen like that! Here’s some back story. My current job is looking for a partner in crime for me, someone with the same skills to fulfill a role as an equal on my team. So basically they are looking for me.
I go into work on the Monday morning and get pulled into an impromptu meeting with my manager. He says “I’ve had an interesting CV come through for the open position.” So I say “Oh thats great let me have a look” and he pulls out my CV. Well I had some explaining to do, although not my fault you can imagine the boss panicking that I was leaving.
Some inept consultant had found my CV on the internet, not even bothered to contact me and decided to forward it to any and all open current positions. I mean what type of person is this?! They are using peoples data without permission, applying them to jobs they don’t want and not only that my current role and company was the company he sent it to. I mean DUH are they totally inept. I just find that dumb and rude.
I won’t go naming and shaming people and companies but lets just say I won’t be shopping there again.
